best of 2008: vacuums

December 22nd, 2008

We spent considerable time with vacuums in 2008 because the vacuum may be the most important household cleaning appliance EVER created.  Nothing does so much to eliminate the dust and grim that will attack your furniture and floors.

the first green vacuum cleaner

December 12th, 2008

The new AirMAX Öko vacuum from AEG-Electrolux lays claim to being the first green vacuum cleaner on the market.

Equipped with a new 1.25 kW motor, the AirMAX consumes 33% less energy than standard 2 kW vacuum cleaners. However, with redesigned fans, dust bag and floor brushes, the Öko insists that performance is not sacrificed.   AEG [...]

soft vacuum hose sock

December 5th, 2008

Earlier in the week, we offered a tip for saving corners when using the hose of a central vacuum, but we were unaware of the Soft Vacuum Hose Sock.  Now, thanks to a generous reader, we are.

There are a number on the market.  Some are quilted with zippers (seems hard).  Another comes in an unidentified [...]

tip of the day: protect corners from vacuum hoses

December 3rd, 2008

The vacuum is Clean+istry’s favorite cleaning tool for the simple reason that it efficiently removes dust and dirt particles from the “Big Three”–floors, furniture and fiber.
Previously, we’ve written of the unintended destructive properties of the canister vacuum.  Over the weekend we realized that the hose of a central vacuum system poses its own risks.  As [...]

tip of the day: vacuum the vegetable bin

November 17th, 2008

There comes the time, every couple of weeks or so, when we pull the drawer to the vegetable bin in the refrigerator and gasp.  Sprigs of loose rosemary, outer layers of garlic, a withered leaf of lettuce.  Not attractive.  And potentially smelly.

Our instinct is to grab a sponge and wipe.  The chore is made far [...]

electrolux EnviroVac

November 11th, 2008

The EnviroVac bagless cleaner, Z2952A claims to be the energy saving light bulb of vacuum cleaners by using 30% less energy, while picking up 20% more than the competition.

How?  The motor uses a mere 800 Watts, when competitive cleaners guzzle 1,600 Watts or more.  And it does it, hopefully, without  sacrificing cleaning performance.  (Note:  Clean+istry [...]

bona hardwood floor cleaner is GreenGuard certified

October 24th, 2008

Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner is GreenGuard Certified for indoor air quality.  We use it.  It’s our favorite.

Most hardwood floors these days are finished with a water-based polyurethane requiring no special waxing.  In general, we tend to keep water away from our floors unless we are cleaning a spill or other special circumstances dictate a more [...]

vroom

October 22nd, 2008

Vroom may be the answer to dry spills in the kitchen that we have been seeking.

We’re huge advocates of rescuing spills in the kitchen with a vacuum since we never learned how to operate a broom and dustpan.  Portable vacuums frustrate us, with their puny power and odd shapes making them awkward to store.  Retrieving [...]
