dual pane windows
August 6th, 2008The thing about dual pane windows (insulated glass) is that sometimes one of the panes breaks. Is the solution to replace the entire window? Or does one summon all of the courage summon-able and attempt to repair it?
According the Burnett brothers, writing the Sweat Equity column for the San Francisco Chronicle, the steps to repair are similar in scope to preparing a glass sandwich–a surgically clean glass sandwich.
Clean+istry lacks sufficient confidence to manipulate silicone well enough to complete the task, HOWEVER, we found the Burnetts’ instruction for cleaning the pane interesting and potentially applicable around the house. They suggest creating a solution consisting of 1 cup isopropyl alcohol, 1 cup water and 1 tbs. white vinegar, using a lint free cloth and a hair dryer on a low speed to eliminate all moisture before resealing the two panes together.
