disclosure
August 12th, 2008At Clean+istry we are HUGE supporters of disclosure. We want to know what’s in the bottle. We’ve been up and running for over a year now (happy b-day to us) and it is high time to answer a few questions.
How do you pick your topics? Sometimes our writing is planned (spring cleaning, for instance), and much of the time it is not (we rarely meet a coaster that we can resist covering). What we choose to write about largely depends on what we’re cleaning at home. In the summer, for instance, we tend to focus on outdoor activities. That explains our mild obsession with the pressure washer.
Many days, we have nothing in our heads at all and simply troll about the internet in search of something relevant to cleaning/home/maintenance/design—and not necessarily in that order. We would like to be all original content all of the time, but we think there’s value in aggregating information as well.
Do you test all of the products you write about? No. We would like to, but we haven’t the time or money. Someday we’ll be big and successful and have a test lab and white coats.
Do you get paid for writing about products? No. Never. Some very nice people have offered to send product that we’ve written about, but we politely decline. We prefer to remain enthusiastic fans of products that we love (hello, Mrs. Myers), and then become fickle when we discover something better. We do not participate in affiliate programs either (even though we see nothing wrong with sites that do). We want to cover products that we find interesting, without any encumbrances.
I get it, you’re a front for a major multi-national corporation. No we aren’t, but we would very much like to be. If you hear that Martha Stewart is in acquisition mode, do call.
Do you plan to accept advertising? We’d love to accept advertising once our traffic picks up (that’s part of your job). Of course, we would gladly bear the children of those who link to us.
What do you do with my e-mail address? At the moment, nothing. We’ll never sell it. Promise. We hope one day to launch a daily e-mail to our faithful readers so that you can be as clean as we are.
May I write to Clean+istry with a specific question? Sure. We’ll try to answer you. Be warned that your question might turn out to be the topic of a future post.
