vetrazzo: if this countertop could talk

February 20th, 2008

All of the glass used to make Vetrazzo is recycled (about 85% of the final weight). The largest proportion of it comes from curbside recycling programs. Other glass comes from post industrial usage, windows, dinnerware, stemware, automotive windshields, stained glass, laboratory glass, reclaimed glass from building demolition…

In other words, you break it, it may end up in your countertop. In fact, Vetrazzo will provide you with a certificate of transformation, enabling you to determine if your countertop has led a more interesting life than you.

Needless to say, this is one mighty green product and using it can assist in LEED certification. It is not, however, maintenance free.

Care and Maintenance. Vetrazzo is fabricated from recycled glass and
concrete. The glass part is impervious to stain. The concrete part is
not. Vetrazzo is sealed upon installation and it is recommended that
the surface be waxed periodically and then resealed once a year.

Spills should be attended to promptly. Avoid allowing acids, like lemon juice and wine, to sit for any extended period of time.

If you enjoy a “carefree” lifestyle (Vetrazzo’s word, not ours–meaning that you leave spills unattended for hours upon end), you will
find that the countertop will “patina”.

Use of the word “carefree” in referencing the sloth is new to Clean+istry. We will adopt it as our own.
