Levente Szabo is the 2007 Electrolux Design Lab winner. The Hungarian design student won with E-wash, a compact washing machine that uses soap nuts instead of detergent.
As reported in Treehugger, Szabó says that his starting point was the polluting effect of both the washing process and the production, packaging and transportation of the detergent. [...]

knoop: dutch for “knot”.
The base of this table is made from resin-impregnated military-grade rope. Designer Josh Urso specializes in using recycled materials to inspire great design.
Clean+istry loves this table but wonders how we would maintain it? Vacuuming the interior of the base would seem problematic. A microfiber duster will reach no [...]

Ah, the bane of the new millennium. How will we ever keep our stainless steel appliances shiny?
Clean+istry has reviewed off-the-shelf products and selected its favorite.
Annie B. Bond recommends using her baking soda-based soft scrub recipe.
Lately, at the advice of our dear and wise friend Kathy, we’ve applied a small amount of lemon oil with [...]

By the Friday after Thanksgiving, Clean+istry was unable to stomach another plate to clean. We longed for the 1960s, disposable plates, mothers who smoke, and no environmental consciousness.
With Christmas, Hannakah and New Year’s just around the bend, stock up on these holiday blessings.
The plates are 100% biodegradable and are made from compostable sugar cane [...]

The 2007 Electrolux Design Lab winners will be announced today.
While all of the products are sleek and beautiful and, of course, clean, we have our eyes on the home composter, a combined sink and dishwasher, and a washing machine that uses soap nuts instead of detergent.

Sorry Franke, we can’t get these sinks out of our heads.
Designed by hand to be the last sink you will ever own (and perhaps your children, too), Eleek aluminum sinks are both beautiful and sustainable.
They can be under mounted or they can stand on their own. The clearcoated aluminum finish is recommended for kitchen [...]

This is what you get for plowing your money into butter, not guns, for the past 60 years.
The Japanese, a Clean+istry approved culture, are determined to create a robot capable of cleaning your home and providing a modest floor show after dinner. Here are a couple of developments.
The lady bug cleans public restrooms.
This little [...]

Yes, sometimes Clean+istry thinks beyond the home to cleaning on a larger, more significant scale. And no, we’re not speaking of dust recently observed in the American Airlines terminal at the Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport.
We have been absorbed by a story profiling a group of volunteers committed to battling the recent Cosco Busan oil spill [...]

(o.c.d. sunday (posted on monday): a series of small cleaning tasks that upon completion say “I am better than you.”)
In last week’s post about oven cleanup we ignored (apologies in advance) the oven racks.
The inherently narrow surface area of the oven rack makes it an annoyance to clean and that is why no one [...]

The turkey? It was good? Moist?
Clean+istry loves to baste with a brush, but we remain unconvinced that traditional brushes can be cleaned and sanitized sufficiently.
On the eve of Thanksgiving, we discovered the silicone basting brush on a last minute trip to our local Williams-Sonoma. This remarkable tool not only bastes evenly, but [...]
