hand soap

October 31st, 2007

Here’s something mildly disturbing and, yet, appropriately creepy to start your Halloween.
Hand soap. Soaps in the shape of little hands. They’re handmade, too.
About 10 hands come with each order (100 grams of soap), ranging in size from 1/2″ to 2″. The hands are made from goat’s milk and vegetable glycerin. And [...]

halo: germ killing vacuum cleaner

October 30th, 2007

Calling itself the world’s only germ-killing vacuum in a $20 million advertising campaign, Halo Technologies is introducing the Halo UV-ST Ultraviolet Vacuum. It uses ultraviolet C light, rather than chemicals, to kill germs while vacuuming.
The machine is a 42-inch upright with a 14-inch wide cleaning path. The germ-killing light is in the base [...]

cords off the floor, please

October 30th, 2007

We don’t think this works in every room in the house. But the holidays are approaching when, like unwanted relatives, extension cords seem always to be hanging about, gathering dust.
Brooklyn-based designer Karl Zahn came up with this twist on nautical applications in his Covers project asking himself the question, “What use is an electrical [...]

shoes off, please

October 30th, 2007

Here’s a whole other pesticide-laden reason for becoming very Japanese and mandating a shoes-off policy at the front door. via treehugger

o.c.d. sunday (posted on monday): dust the light switches

October 29th, 2007

(o.c.d. sunday (posted on monday): a series of small cleaning tasks that upon completion say “I am better than you.”)

clean dreams friday: plus minus zero

October 26th, 2007

Imagine a humidifier that you wouldn’t mind finding in your living room. Imagine an air purifier guided in its design by the philosophy that if a space is beautiful, then the air will feel even cleaner.
Now, imagine that you are in Japan.
Because Japan is where you would need to live in order to buy [...]

bathroom maintenance: wipe the tiles

October 25th, 2007

Second in a series.
Clean+istry dislikes cleaning bathroom tile, and the grout in between, after it has become dirty and discolored. The task is difficult and the results rarely satisfy.
Many years ago, before Clean+istry was Clean+istry, we discovered a little trick requiring little more than one minute a week. The payoff is monumental.
For many [...]

magis broom in orange and white

October 24th, 2007

Magis, the maker of our favorite stepladder, now makes a broom.
It comes in white.
It comes in orange.
It is made from polypropylene with glass fiber added. The brush is polyester.
And it is $72 at fitzsu society.
What would compel us to spend $72 on a broom?

Because spare brushes are available, which means the broom [...]

countertops: walnut update

October 23rd, 2007

Several weeks ago, we covered the care and maintenance of solid walnut countertops. This past weekend Clean+istry was put to the test by the wet-bottomed glassware of several dinner guests enjoying lively conversation and a particularly good Parmesan.
This, surprisingly, was a disaster of Clean+istry’s own making. The walnut countertop, being a warm [...]

October 22nd, 2007

As promised, this is bathroom maintenance week. We’ll break it up into bite-sized pieces. You have nothing to fear.
Today, we start with the washbasin and its surroundings.
